To me, Aunt Bea was the quintessential matriarch of the family, even if she never saw herself that way. She had a natural gift for caring—especially for her nieces and nephews—and she carried the family’s traditions with grace and pride. A consummate cook, her table always had room for one more, and her kitchen was filled with love as much as it was with the scent of something delicious. Though I was just her niece’s husband, she filled a space in my heart I didn’t know was empty. She had a way of making me feel seen, welcomed, and special every single time we were together. Sharing recipes and talking about food with her was always a joy, a shared language of warmth and connection. Aunt Bea gave so much of herself to her extended family, and all of us are better for having been touched by her kindness, her sacrifices, and her unshakable love.
